You have finally stored away your cap and gown, moved out of your student digs and attended your last post-graduation party. Now what? Considering your career after university can be sometimes daunting. A career in Recruitment can offer the right person a challenging and lucrative career taking them from trainee to MD sometimes within same time it took to complete your degree!

Why choose recruitment as a career?

Recruitment has long been a highly rewarded and progressive industry to work within. You are consistently challenged and exposed to some of the fastest growing and interesting industries available. As a recruiter you have the privilege of working with extremely successful individuals within your company as well as having exposure to leading brand names within your market.

Don’t I need experience though?

Apart from work experience while at university, many of our clients actually prefer to hire bright, ambitious graduates that they can train. Recruitment companies offer some fantastic graduate training schemes and have many examples of past Trainees who are now their top performing consultants.

What is my earning potential?

The basic* salary for a trainee recruitment consultant ranges from £20-30k per annum with an OTE *of anything between £45-60k.

But I don’t think I am a ‘Big Company’ person

The brilliant thing about the recruitment sector is that it is made up of small, medium and large companies. Each culture varies vastly from the other offering a huge choice to potential recruiters to find their perfect home. Most recruitment companies tend to reflect the industry that they recruit in and you will often find the atmosphere within Media Recruitment Company far more relaxed (i.e. suits are not often worn and ties non-existent), compared to a legal recruitment company or search firm have to be more corporate to identify with their client and candidate base.

What will the working hours be, do I have to work weekend?

Yippee, the days of studying and working all through your weekends are over!! The working hours in recruitment however are fairly long and you will be expected as a Trainee to show your dedication by arriving early for work. You may also have to work late some evening (6.30pm -7pm), however all companies vary with work hours so don’t worry about this just yet. Also remember that as a recruiter, the more you put in, the more you get out, so often staying a little later can pay dividends!

I’ve never really gone for an interview before, help!!

We will pre-brief you on what our clients look for in their new hires as well as some tips for you to get the best out of the interview process. Don’t forget that the skill of how to conduct a successful interview is a learning curve so if you don’t get it the first time we will be there to help you perfect your skills as an interviewee.

Don’t forget that our clients are not looking for the finished article and are more interested in enthusiasm, commitment, dedication and drive!

Recruitment Glossary for Grads

Recruiters like to use a lot of industry specific jargon. There are some definitions below that may help you with your research into the recruitment industry.

  • Basic; basic monthly salary before commission
  • O.T.E.– on target earnings (basic + commission).
  • Researcher; the person who gathers names of potential candidates for the senior consultant/headhunter
  • Trainee;Junior consultant often undergoing a graduate trainee program
  • Headhunter; The person who researches and approaches candidates directly within the market
  • Retained; when you are paid a fee prior to finding the candidate for undertaking the search.
  • Contingency; when you are paid for the placement after the candidate starts work
  • Client; who you are working with (the company with the vacancy)
  • Candidate; the person who you are finding a role for

Interview Questions to ask;

The greatest piece of advice I have been given for interviews is to always have your list of questions ready to ask your interviewer. Asking questions will give you the ability to find out more about the individual/company/team and role and also give you a chance to demonstrate your experience and knowledge you have gained from doing your research before the interview.

Doing your research prior to the interview is key to showing that you are a true professional. Knowing about the company, the Directors, the key areas they recruit within, a little bit of company history and any current news about the company will win you points in any interview!

When answering a question it is really useful to give an example from your current or past role to paint a picture for the Interviewer about what you have achieved and experience you have.

For example;

  • What skills/background do you look for in a Trainee Recruitment consultant?
  • What strengths are important to demonstrate as a TRC?
  • What are the greatest challenges a TRC would face in their first 6 months in the role?
  • Where would you see me fitting/succeeding within The company?
  • How many Graduates are you seeing for this position?
  • If I hit all my targets as a TRC where could I expect to be within the company in 12 months time?
  • What hurdles does a TRC usually face in their first 3 months within the role? How should they overcome them?
  • What OTE should a TRC expect to earn in their first year within the company?
  • The Recruiters role can often be assumed as being the same in all companies by some interviewers so giving examples is a brilliant way to differentiate you from other candidates.
